Breast Enlargement Surgery

Breast enlargement surgery is the most popular cosmetic treatments. This is followed by rhinoplasty (surgery to enhance the nose), liposuction, and facelifts.

Despite its popularity, plastic surgeons I have talked to would like women to weigh the pros and cons before they decide to undergo bigger breasts surgery.

Many women think that a breast augmentation procedure or breast implant is a simple procedure with very few complications. Fact is, breast enlargement surgery should not be taken lightly. You should be able to make an informed decision and take into account the potential risks and side-effects.

Breast Enlargement Surgery’s Lasting Impact

The first thing to know is that breast implants or augmentation are not a one-off surgery that can be performed and forgotten. The potential for complications gradually increase over time. Either for aesthetic reasons or safety, more surgeries will need to be performed later on in life.

Besides the initial cost, you must take into account additional cost when the implants need to be removed or replace. Most breast implants need to be removed after 10-15 years.

Choice of Breast Implants

The second fact to consider is the choice and quality of the breast implants. Whether is saline or silicone gel implants, each has its own risks and rewards.

Silicone gel implants are silicone shells filled with plastic gel (silicone).

The advantages of breast enlargement surgery using silicone implants are:-

  • Natural looking and breasts that feel like real.
  • Less visible rippling and wrinkling.
  • The risk of downward displacement of the breasts due to gravity is minimal, as silicone is lighter.

The disadvantages are:-

  1. During the implantation surgery, a larger incision is required, as silicone implants come in a fixed size, thus there will be a bigger scar.
  2. Silicone implants rapture “silently”, so there are no outward signs that a rupture has occurred.  As such, your doctor will advise that you go for routine MRI scans.
  3. The cost is much higher than saline implants.

Saline implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline).

Advantages of saline implants are:-

  • The scar is shorter as saline implants can be filled after they are placed between the breast tissue and chest muscle.
  • The cost is lower than silicone implants.
  • There is no risk of a “silent” rupture. If the silicone shell of a saline implant ruptures, the saline generally leaks out and is absorbed by the body within a day or two. Obviously the breasts will become smaller.

And the disadvantages of breast enlargement surgery using saline implants are:-

  1. They tend to look round and stiff which is very unnatural especially on thin women with modest breast tissue.
  2. Large saline implants have a higher rate of downward displacement as they are much heavier compared to silicone.

Saline Or Silicone Implants for Breast Enlargement Surgery

The best way to decide whether to have silicone or saline implants is to identify which issues are important to you.

If you want your post operation breasts to look and feel natural, then silicone implants are a better choice.

But, if you want to have lower cost, shorter scars and no MRI scans, then saline implants might be more suitable.

Breast Enlargement Surgery Post Operation Pain

From what I had heard (feed backs from clients who frequent my women’s health shop) breast enlargement surgery is not for the fainthearted. For the first 2 to 3 days the pain scale will be around 9 out of a scale of 10. You have to take pain killers every 4 hours to manage the pain.

Grocery shopping or carrying your children on the first week after the operation are out of the question.  As these involve carrying quite heavy loads, there will be a lot of pain.

Women who have had the operation recommends that you get a strong support network to manage your household before going for your breast implant operation as the pain will only subside after the fifth week.

You should continue with your monthly self-examination of your breasts, your regular schedule of mammograms and screenings. These measures are not only for early detection of breast cancer but they also help to determine the current state of your bigger breast implants.
